The Cost Of War

Tomorrow in the sunlight
I shall walk in the manured fields
And weep for the yellow dust of the dead.
-Tu Fu (8th Century Chinese poet)
Tu Fu counted the dead
along the road
and in his heart.
By firelight in a field
hungry and far from home
he stood closing his eyes
to tell their story.
