| Polishing Only the Nose of the Bronze Statue of
Christ |
| Bob Hoeppner |
A religion as wide as the world
cannot fit inside one skull,
but maybe in one heart
there is room to prop a crucifix
with a smiley-face on it.
A curse as wide as Apocalypse
cannot fit inside one birth,
but maybe in one atom
there is room to make a fire
with a marshmallow in it.
A wound as wide as a war
cannot fit inside one palm,
but maybe on one page
there is space to seal a truce
with a band-aid on it.
A death as wide as a fraud
cannot fit inside one God,
but maybe on one Christ
there is room to put a shine
with a little spit on it.
