The End of Winter 1.20.09
Elaine Bentley Baughn
Politics of hatred and divisiveness, failed.
Fat and greedy monomaniacs exposed.
In comes a breeze, soft as young April,
no promise of an early warming trend.
Nothing much to go on but Hope,
that virtue long neglected in favor of
a militant hauteur that impressed the land
with a uniformity of mind, insipid, saturnine.
Today begins a thaw as if a brook,
iced-over these last eight years,
trickles forth to slake a thirst
for Truth, however hard, and Unity,
that suspended and voluntary ascent
in thin shared light, unimposed.
